This past week, on my visits to the produce markets, I’m starting to see the Fall crop of Florida sweet corn make its Autumn appearance.  Corn is one of my favorite vegetables to eat, and it’s versitility make it an indispensable ingredient.

My favorite Florida sweet corn comes from Zellwood, Florida, about 15 miles north of Orlando.  The area used to be one of the biggest producers of sweet corn in the state, but today, Long and Scott Farms are the only operation growning the crop.  The Fall crop is typically available from October until around mid-December, and another Spring crop can be found from April until early June.  David, the produce manager at Morton’s Market on Osprey is really good about stocking it when it is in season, and it’s truly a treat if you can find it.  If you let him know you’d like some, he’ll be happy to contact you when he has it available.

Football season starts tonight (Go Broncos!!!)…this is a perfect meal to sit and eat on the couch while you watch your team destroy the opponent.  Don’t forget some crusty bread and either a crisp Chardonnay, light, fruity red or a robust Porter to go with it.  Enjoy!
